Wierd colored Miata….

I saw the coolest color of Miata (pre-99) last night – it
was a deep plum.  Was that an aftermarket paint job, or
were they ever really that color?

Could be the 95 M metallic reddish purple.  They call it some silly name like
Merlot, but it’s really purple.  After all, merlot isn’t a color.  It’s either
a wine, or, in this case, it’s a marketing device.

Sounds like the fabulous "Mica Merlot" (Merlot Mica?) to me.

If it had the tan interior and the distinctive feature of seats with
a separate adjustable headrest, definitely.  Great color.

The idiots at Bob King Mazda in Winston-Salem NC (I ought to re-post why
they are so bad….but that’s another story) INSISTED that it was
pronounced like "merlott", as in rhymes with ‘harlot’.

Nope, AFAIK it’s the 95M only.  And James, I never mumble. ;-)

There is one that roams around near me occassionally thats a fluorescent
lipstick pink – and she has a matching hard top as well.  It actually
looks a lot better than it sounds!

It started out plain old white, but the local dealer did a special paint
job on it for an exhibit and then sold it cheaply.

The deep plum would be the merlot Miata, which was the special edition in
either 96 or 97. So, it was an official factory color (my favorite actually),
but cost extra and is no longer available.

The merlot was on ’95 M (my boss has one). ’96M was starlight mica blue.
The Merlot often looks black until the sun hits it just right (or maybe
    it’s
just that I live in Seattle, so there’s darn little sun <g>) and then
it’s a very dark red, like the interior of a plum seen thru sunglasses.

The plum colored miata is an "M" edition.  They are a custom color from
miata – different every year.  I think 1994 was plum.  Really cool looking!

Maybe in Canada, but the Montego Blue "hit the streets" as a normal color in
    1995.  I had this color on a 1995 PEP.

Man, you people forget so quickly…

1994 M-Edition…Montego Blue Mica  (blue, green, gold)
1995 M-Edition…Merlot Mica  (deep burgundy to ruddy red)
1996 M-Edition…Starlight Blue Mica  (deep blue)
1997 M-Edition…Marina Green Mica  (metallic BRG)
1997 STO-Edition…Twilight Blue Mica  (deep blue)

Montego Blue hit the streets as a normal colour in 1996 after the removal of
Laguna Blue (1994-95), and Twilight Blue is now a normal colour for the 1999.
