Ticking noise…

The last couple of days, I have been noticing a slight
pinging/knocking/ticking noise at idle and at low acceleration. I am within
1000 miles of needing an oil change, so at first I assumed that this was the
classic Miata lifter noise when the car needs an oil change. I checked the
oil level, and it appears to be perfect. Anyone have any ideas? The car is a
’95 M edition with the 1.8 liter. I’m probably worrying for nothing, but
when it comes to this car, I’ll take the chance–thanks in advance.

What octane gas are you using – if regular, and if it’s really knocking,
going to premium Should make it go away..
If it does not,  before the oil change, run some oil system & fuel
system cleaners thru it, & see if it leaves with the old oil & filter.

How often are you changing oil?

I usually use 87 octance. I’ll try some 89 at the next fill-up. I really
hope I don’t have to use anything over 90–that would get expensive.

Every 3000 miles. Thanks for your help.

Why do you think it’s not the classic lifter ticking?
If it does it at idle it’s not pinging.
    Nothing to worry about =)
    Just change the oil.

    Cheers,

I was always under the impression that the lifter noise was only directly
    after startup.

    Yes, it does.

Great–I think I’m worrying about nothing too, but you know how it is… :)

This may not be the case, but I was
coming down with a ticking as well. I
    think I’ve solved it.
My No. 1 spark plug was loose. Sounded
just like lifter noise on an engine with
out oil. Drove me nuts for the last few
days. You may have a different plug
loose, but with mine it was easy to tell
which one I hadn’t tightened properly.
The plug wire kept creeping up and no
amount of effort would get it to stay
    down.
