Hi,
1) I’m in Santa Monica, CA and wondered if anyone knows of a shop in my
specific area who is willing to do aftermarket performance work on my
Miata (when I get it) like header, intake, catback, cam gears, cams, dyno
testing, shocks, lowering springs, strut brace, etc.
2) Is there a newstand magazine that emphasizes Miatas as opposed to
"muscle" cars?
3) What are the benefits of joining the national and local Miata clubs?
Thanks,
Bill

Hi, i live in marina del ray, so i`m pretty close to you,
theres a couple of places, Top End performance (just past tthe
405/101) will
blueprint and rebuild your miata to 380bhp for around $7000-$8000
they`ll also do the simpler cheaper stuff too, Monster Motorsports
are in Escondido (about 80 away) but worth it, dave is a great guy,
he`ll drop in the V8 for you, body kits etc etc. I`ve got the numbers
and address`s give me a email and remind me to send them to you.

Dunno about 2 haven`t seen anything much, i buy turbo & hi tech
performance, they do miata occasionally, according to most of the
mechanics i`ve talked to here , say that the bottom is dropping out
of the miata performance aftermarket and everyone is downsizing or
dropping miata stuff, i had enough problems trying to get a k&n air
filter kit. There are a few specialized dealers, dealer alternative
seem to be very good., BSP too, and jackson racing seem like a
well used company.
3) i joined socalm and so far haven`t done much with them, they
do picnics, runs and other stuff, but it all seems to be far away
from LA, (given my bad knowledge of CA geography i could be wrong
about this)
Big clubs seem to be for advice, and most of that seems to be on the
web these days, so apart from meets and so on, i wonder too….

Bill, although the only magazine for the Miata is the Miata Club of America’s
Miata Magazine (five issues per year for $25 US), there are others that do
articles on the Miata from time to time – the best of which is Grassroots
Motorsports. They’ve done to my knowledge, four issues now (less focus every
time) with the most current being this months issue. Sports Car International
has done a few big articles, as Jay Lamm, the editor, is a Miata fan, and has
written two excellent books about the car.
As for the club question, the MCofA will get you the magazine and that’s about
that. Back issues are available. As for joining a local chapter, do it. You
won’t ever regret it, as you’ll find a wealth of first hand info, help, and
great people.

Your closest bet regarding newstand magazines is probably Sport Compact
Car. It does most of it’s articles on Japanese imports, quite often
there’s an article on a miata.
