At risk of being flamed for bring up a tired old question (I’m new to this
list)… I am considering purchasing a 2001 Miata, and wondered if anyone could
comment on either an internet source (or other) that discloses dealer invoice
and decent sales prices for the new models? An yone recently been through the
ordeal of negotiating for a new one? Care to comment on haggling stragtegies
and what kind of "discount" to expect? Thanks.

If they just matched it, then why not stick with the credit union?
(I’d rather trust a credit union with my loan — heck, I did
— than
a dealer…but that’s just me.)

Although it wasn’t for a Miata, I had good luck buying a car through
<http://www.carsdirect.com/>. You can find out plenty about car buying
from <http://www.edmunds.com/> or <http://www.kbb.com/>.

I just ordered my Miata several weeks ago. I went to http://www.edmunds.com and
got the pricing information. Then simply called a local dealer, told him
exactly what I wanted, price I would pay. There wasn’t any hassle, they
gave me the price. I also told them I could finance it through my local
credit union, they then matched the rate and handled all the paperwork.

Mazda is making it as complicated as possible at the moment. i.e. a local dealer
has been running a Miata ad for a 2001 at $16,997!!! When you start to read the
fine print, you note that it doesn’t include freight (fine) dealer installed
options (there’s those $300.00 pinstripes) and includes; rebates, recent college
grad discount (?), former Mazda financing customer (?) and all "other incentives
including financing"(?). I thought that Virginia had cleaned up its act with
dealers and their advertising methods but apparently not. I have no idea what that
car would have really cost as I’m not in the market and even if I was, wasn’t
prepared for the ordeal of wading through all this with a salesman. I do know that
we are getting ready to replace my wife’s Accord with another one and the Honda
dealers seem fairly desperate to move iron (everytime the stock market drops, the
salesman calls back with a new price – what a coincidence). Good luck.
