Actually, a good hat won’t blow off. Some options for sunburn
protection include:
A good big hat. I have the Outdoor Research Snoqualamie Sombrero.
It’s GREAT for the Miata, but it does look a little silly. It’s more
useful when it gets a bit chilly, because it has a neat built-in earflap.
It also has a cord that goes under your neck that holds it on quite
neatly. It has weathered 100+mph (er, um, I mean, 65+mph, Officer!).
Additional bonus on this one is that it shades your face and neck.
Actually, any hat will work, just be sure that it has that valuable chin
cord.
A baseball cap. Yep, it’ll stay on, just fasten it tightly (and if
you have a ponytail, put it through the hole in the back). I’ve worn them
on many many occasions, and if the cap fits you fairly well, you won’t
have a problem (unless it’s REALLY windy, or you’re going pretty fast on
the highway).
A scarf. My girlfriend swears by hers. If your hair is on the
longish side, a scarf wrapped around the head will hold your hair in place
and help protect against sunburn.
Hope one of these ideas helps…

Just like suntanning at the beach–work up to it gradually. Once you
have a decent tan on your part (yep, it happens), you can stay out all
day and not get burnt.

Not necessarily. Mine stays on at 85-90mph, and I’m tall enough that
my head sticks well up into the airflow over the windshield. Just
keep the visor aimed slightly downward so that it doesn’t catch the
air.

Um, the one on the *hat*, not the ones on the car! The main reason I
haven’t removed the (nearly useless) visors on my car is that I hate
the suction cup mount that came w/ my radar detector.
And if your comment alludes to the fact that you wear your hat
backwards, hand over your keys immediately; you don’t deserve a Miata

Does the Citabria have a glass roof, by any chance?

Plexiglass, but yeah. I can, however, wear a hat without fear of
it blowing off in the Citabria. Now, I’ll be starting aerobatics
in a couple weeks – whether it will stay on at the top of a loop
may be a different issue.
I think I’ll try a baseball cap in the Miata. I used to have a
really, really cool _black lace_ baseball cap – got it at Target.
I’ll have to see if I can dig it up or go buy another one…
Thanks! I just assumed the wind would catch it and flip it off…

If it falls off at the top of a loop you either didn’t have enough knots
when you started or pulled too hard and bled off too many. I hope the
Citabria is as forgiving as the J-3 Cub I once stalled inverted at the
top of a loop….

Only on Usenet can you post a question asking about sunburn protection
in your new convertable and get advice on looping a Citabria.

For a couple of bucks you can pick up little clip-on cords that attach
to your hat and the back of your shirt to keep your hat from flying off.

Number one on the list of complaints about the Miata: Sunburn.
(Number two is probably being worshiped by members of the
opposite sex, and you are happily married.)
As an aside, I always have to remember to put sunblock on the
inside of my arms. Rarely a problem outdoors except on the beach,
but I drive with my hands at 9 and 3 and that opens up the inside
of the elbows. First summer Miata owners beware.

It could be worse, you could be an older guy with thining hair.
One time I put sunblock on the bare spots when skiing without a
hat. You can dab some into the part and it works well.
A well fitting cap will not blow off. My experience is limited to
the mid 90s, and I am tall enough to feel the buffeting. The cap
does have to be a snug fit, but the wind is mostly from the back
and does not catch the brim. I can’t drive the car in full sun
without a cap; too much light coming down behind the sunglasses.
There is a company that makes a lid spoiler if you are paranoid.
Choose your hat carefully to avoid local gang colors and match
the image you like when driving. Or go for the Gina+Susan /
Thelma+Louise look with shades and a scarf and a big handgun.

So you’ve got that problem too!! Damned hurts, doesn’t it?
I still remember the first time it happened – I hadn’t even known about
the thinning hair because I could only see it on the back of my head if
I use two mirrors. Spent a week testing some equipment at Eglin AFB,
near Pensecola. At the end of the first day went back to my hotel room
to change and have a shower. All was fine until I ran a comb through my
hair – AAAAGGGHHH!!! Fortunately, that was a couple of weeks before I
bought my Miata, so it warned me to take care when I did.

While it is hardly relevant, I am not happily married. I am
happy, but I am not married. :)

I’m pleased to report that I drove 180+ miles this weekend, and
don’t have a spot of red. I covered all bare skin in SPF 45 sunblock,
and the top of my head was still tan from a couple weeks ago.
(Oh, and in other news, I passed my private pilot checkride this weekend,
so I’m a brand-new pilot. Anybody who has an interest in hearing the
story, I put it up at http://www.neosoft.com/~tina/ppasel.htm)
