I read from miata.net that you can move the spare tire on a Miata from
within the trunk to under the trunk, and save some space, has anyone in
local Austin area done this? I’d like to know your experience, which
garage did you work with and the cost, etc.
Thanks.

It’s called a CanDoo exhaust and there’s a tire bracket from Moss.
I’m not doing it because the CanDoo runs a fake pipe to the stock
exhaust exit location, while the real exhaust cowers under the rear
bumper molding (on the opposite side of the car, I believe).
A while back someone reported simply using some well-placed bolts
to hold the tire on (the Moss bracket is $50, naturally, for
little more than a few bolts perhaps welded to a plate), and
using one of what is usually a pair of Camaro mufflers creatively
arranged such that none of it is visible below the bumper line,
providing a nice view of the rear suspension AND increasing
trunk space (AND maintaining the stock exaust tip location).
So there’s kits or make your own. Any local muffler shop should
be able to work it out with you. Rather than stock every tailpipe
under the sun, they’re quite handy at fabricating tube segments
to fit under any car.

Took the words right out of my mouth…
Besides I think it would stick up a lot further than on a Caddy

Such a device was once pondered.. they started to draft designs.. but
at some odd hour of the morning an assault team sponsored by the Taste
Police raided the architects office, burned the design and used one of
the MIB’s memory flash devices to wipe out any related thoughts from
his memory..
Hope that helps.
