Price?? Canada

I have noticed that the price for a used 1990 Miata is very consistant at
the dealers throughout our area varying only a few hundred dollars depending
on milage.   It is, of course, much higher than the red book price.

How much do they usually come down?   Is there a formula as there seems to be
for pricing them?   I would prefer to buy privately, but there are very few
Miatas available in our area.

Thanks

Check out the red book value at your local library for an idea of what
you can expect to pay at a private sale; add 10% (at least) for dealers.
Out of curiosity, I looked up the value of my 1990 Miata in last year’s
red book – $10,500.  My Miata has power stearing and alloy rims.

I did look up the red book price.  For a 1990 the retail for a basic model
in our area is 9,700.  Dealers always seem to ask in the neighborhood of
14,000 (unbelieveable) and private sales are in the range of 12,000 (if they
    come up which is rare).

Do dealers go by the red book??   I don’t know how much they expect to come
down when they set a price.  4,000 seems an awful lot to drop.

I believe dealers use the blue book value, but I should point out that I
    only paid $14,200 for my 1990 Miata in 1992 (it had 14,600km) in Ottawa;
the car listed new for $19,800.  Any dealer still asking $14K for the same
car now is soaking you.  If red book is $9700, then $12K is probably a
good deal from a dealer, and I wouldn’t go higher than $10,500 on a private
    sale.

BTW, if you’ve only checked city dealers, you may want to drive out of
town and check out the rural dealers – when I was shopping, I noticed a
price drop of $1500 on the same model with the same mileage.

For soem reason, the prices in Ottawa are high this year – all the dealers I’ve talked to have commented that
they’re paying over the red book price themselves.  Many Canadian Miatas are being shipped overseas, and I
think the law of supply and demand is catching up with us.

If you really want to save money, wait until the snow flies.  Miatas are a little harder to find, but the
    price drops by around 20%.

Hey, I live in New Brunswick, the City delers ARE  the rural dealers  :-)

More confusion!  What is the blue book.  How does it differ from the red
book??   Please don’t tell me there is a sunshine yellow as well  :-)

If I have my colours correct, the red book is for private sales, and blue
book is wholesale prices (ie. what the dealer will pay).  So, unfortunately,
I may have misled you earlier.

I’d give you permission to flame me, but it’s a waste of bandwidth.  :)

But the Red Book gives a wholesale and a retail price.  I thought this was the
    dealers book.
