Popup headlight cover alignment

I vaguely remember seeing a post about headligh alignment.
I have a 97 MX5. The right hand headlight cover seems to be about 5mm below
the bonnet line.
The bonnet doesn’t seem to be bent but that’s the visual effect!!
How can this be fixed??

I’ve had that problem several times after servicing. The pop-ups are
easy to lean on and go easily out of alignment. The simple
solution-raise the pop-up,  grab it and move it into alignment. It
sounds scary to try, but I saw a mechanic do it when I complained, and
I’ve done it myself on two or three occasions.

    Good luck.

    Vern,
Open the headlight units by pressing the button to activate on your dash
above the environmental controls.  Look at the four screws holding the
headlight cover in place.  You can loosen these screws and make some minor
adjustments in the position of the headlight cover.
            Good luck.

On my miata, and I would expect most, there is a shroud around the
assembly that hides the four screws you are referring to.  The shroud is
attached by four screws also, but loosening them will not help you
adjust the cover – you would have to remove the shroud entirely, as I
did, then loosen the four screws holding the cover.

Or you could just grab the cover and yank on it – this does work
    according to popular wisdom.

Okay. Question. How exactly does the headlight cover get misaligned?
Answer: By leaning ones weight on it… bending it inwards.

So wouldn’t it make more sense to ‘bend’ it back outwards, rather than
attempt to realign the bent cover? It got that way from bending, not
through shakes and rattles. No need to turn screws.

And no, I do not recommend ‘yanking’ it. The former president of my club
showed me how everyone around here does it: Keep lights down, raise
hood. Pull gently upward at rear of cover. Close hood. Press down gently
    on lid to realign.

    Simple as that.

After raising the aft edge, I’ll open the lights and pull up the
front edge.  Over a few iterations of re-aligning the aft edge
only, the front edge gets buried below the bumper line.  So both
    edges need to be done.

Jason’s reason is right on.  It’s also why my prior experience at
first led me to believe that undoing the screws and all that was
the right way – because the car I had worked on previously with the
hidden headlight covers had covers stiff enough to NOT BEND – they
really did move under the hold-down screws.  A Miata is not like
this.  The tab under the screws does not move – the metal bends.
