In my jubilation after replacing my steel wheels with the factory seven
spoke wheels, I thought, ‘How would those brake calipers look painted?’
Have any of you done this? Do you have any pictures (either on the web or
via e-mail)? Is it as simple as some paint (high remp necessary?), and
some masking tape? Thanks!

Much better

Yes

No

Try VHT paint as the calipers will get very hot. Put something in behind the
caliper to stop overspray onto the arch(like hold a piece of card). Don’t
worry about the disc as the paint will get rubbed off in a few brake
applications, though it may not stop as well until this happens.

I painted mine about 1 year ago, using high temp spray paint. I
sprayed the paint in a cup and painted the caliper with a Q-tip.
Worked just dandy and the end results are quite pleasing. The paint
still looks like new.
Just my experiences jeff
I taped off the area and spray painted the calipers on my yellow a bright
red… used a no name paint from Home Depot… still looks like the day I did
it six months ago.

A Company called Folia Tec sells brake caliper paint in a bunch of
colors that you car just brush on. I’ve never tried it, but I just
happened to be looking through their catalog.

I can’t see spending $40 for the Folia Tec caliper paint when everyone
says $2 no-name paint works just as good. I would use the high-temp
myself, but the rice boys around here all use regular spray paint
without any problems. Hmph.

Who is "everyone"….? Last I looked ONE person said so. Believe me, the
FoliaTec product is far far superior. Their cleaner alone is worth the price of
admission
.

Well, everyone that I have met personally and inquired about their
method of painting. Two former co-worker friends show their cars at car
shows, and used the spray paint factory color match touch up stuff with
no problems. Two years and the stuff still looks brand new. As in
flawless.
Maybe the Folia Tec does work, I don’t know. That just seems like an
awful lot of money for what they give you.

As far as I know that "one" was me… I cleaned the area with brake cleaner
first and put on three coat about an hour apart… the no-name home depot
paint is no folia tec but it works just fine

Then we have a matched pair! I painted the calipers on my red ’95
yellow. I used the garden variety spray paint from a discount auto
parts store.
I also painted the rotors (not including the brake surface) red, but
for that I used a high temperature paint. This paint is supposed to
be good to 950 deg F. and requires a one hour cure at 650 deg F. I
cured it by driving around the neighborhood for about half an hour in
2nd gear and holding the brake pedal a bit. Since the fronts seemed
to be heating up faster, I added a few clicks on the parking brake to
equalize the heating. This got the brakes hot enough to smell, but not
enough to fade away. I have no idea if the rotors reached 650 deg F.,
and I’m sure that the hub itself didn’t get as hot due to heat sinking
through the wheel, but the paint turned reddish brown immediately
following the treatment. Upon cooling, it turned back to red.
The plain paint on the calipers did not seem to be damaged during
this ‘heat treatment’. This has been on for only a couple of weeks,
so I’ll have to wait to see how it holds up.
<NMC, film processing woes.>
I’ll have pictures on my swb site soon if Target ever gets through
screwing around with my pictures. I got two rolls back a week
ago today and promptly returned then because they were printed so
poorly. As of Friday, they still had not been returned to the store.
I don’t take film to Target (a US Nationwide discount store) any
more.

Well, what does your owner manual say? Mine was pretty detailed
about handling my 1996 top.

Actually the 99 manual is fairly silent on any precautions regarding
lowering the top. And in fact, my 99 came with a care instruction pamphlet
for the old plastic window! I had to read it twice before realizing there
was no zipper on the new glass window, then realized it was for the old
plastic one…
As a previous owner of a 95 Miata, I was very cautious about the window at
first. But it seems that the only "precaution" (and it is not mentioned in
the manual) is to make sure that the window is laying flat before you let
the top all the way down. Sometimes this takes a gentle pull on the top of
the glass to allow it to begin laying down flat.
Any one else have any other notes??

Yes, unlike one of our local dealers you just MIGHT want to ensure
that you didn’t set a lock box (the little thing that hangs on the
window and holds the car keys) on the rear deck before you lower the
top.. That salesmans paycheck is now a good bit lighter.. (wince)

At speed (i.e. around 60 or so) the rain from a light shower will
not come in the car. Small drops get carried over the car.

I would assume that one always applies. Stop before raising the top.
By the way, nothing can match a canopy road over your head…..

So do Florida thunderstorm-downpours. I have been there. The amount
of water that gets in is negligible. It is scary if there is
a possibility you might have to stop, though. And even more
scary to have to decide whether you want to slow down because
you cannot see more than a few car lengths in front of you or stay
at speed to keep the water out.

It’s odd, I get less rain in the car on the hwy if I leave the top
down than if I put it up. For some reason the upper edges of the
windows (rear edge) tends to pull in water. need to adjust them or
something. Btw, if you have a hard time seeing ahead of you try

Funny, I thought CA *was* getting "real Florida rain" this year.

I just looked at our local ‘climate summary’ and we have had 18.84
inches YTD, just over normal (18.44), despite being low for the
month (0.26 -vs- 1.90; April is normally fairly dry). How does it
compare in California so far?
From the stories I have seen, national news panic when they get an
inch or so, I can’t imagine that they have ever seen 3 or 4 inches
in an hour during a summer dump, or our normal of 60+" per year.
But I do see that L.A. has 27.86" for the season, well over the
14.16" normal. No wonder you left coasters are complaining. You
probably don’t get it all in 10 minutes with the sun back out
afterwards either.

Nah. We get an amount of rain resembling Florida. But over
here in CA, nature rains the water down. In Florida, nature
simply collects all available water and then drops it.

There are something like 5 different adjustments on the window
to alter the way it contacts the top.
