Can someone tell me the type of paint Mazda used on the ’97 brilliant
black Miata and if it has a clearcoat. Mine scratches like it has a
clearcoat, although I have seen previous postings indicating Mazda does
not clearcoat solid colors.

Paint type?
You are correct, no clearcoat on pre 99 solid colors. With the exception of
maybe yellow. The 99′s are "supposed" to have clearcoat on all colors
according to the dealer i spoke to. But is that something the dealer "really"
would know?
