    Brian,

You need an aftermarket DIN dash kit. I prefer and recommend kits from
either Scosche or Metra. American International is also decent and is
widely available at electronic chains (e.g. Best Buy). I would stay away
    from everything else.

Make sure the kit is specifically made for the Miata (although some
generic Mazda 88-95 will work just as well, afaik).

I saw ‘em at BrainStorm.  Don’t know if it’s in their catalog,
    but they’re in the shop…

Radio Shack sells kits containing the required part (plus a bunch of
other mounting and dressing plastic for various sized radios in various
    cars) for about $15.

I just order a cubby pocket thing (for under my factory radio) from my
local Mazda dealer… Unfortunately it was $23!

You could almost buy a KG Works map light for that much.

    Almost.  :)

Do not use the universal Mazda install kit from Metra. I put everything
together just as it said and the damn thing wouldn’t fit in the dash. It
was too wide at the bottom.

Nevermind…. I just went to pick it up and the cubby is to REPLACE the
radio, according to the Mazda parts guy they don’t make a pocket/cubby
thing to fit under the factory radio just a plate.
    I spoke too soon…

My ’95 came with a cubby hole that fit under the stock cassette/radio. I
replaced the radio with a standard DIN size one and bought a taller
cubbyhole from the dealer. It needed to be trimmed to fit because it was a
    bit too tall.

I got the specific part number info off of miata.net

I just installed the universal Mazda install kit from Metra, in my Miata.
You’re right it is too wide at the bottom.  I simply used a file and
squared the 2 bottom round corners of the dash.  Worked fine after that.
