What’s the best way you Miata owners store your hardtop when it’s off the
car?
I have seen the "carts" and the "hoists". The hoist looks good to me, I
wonder if it is secure enough to hold up the roof continously for months on
end?
thanks

I carry mine down to the basement where it waits on the floor for
next fall.

We use one of those carts from Moss. The first year the hardtop sat on the
floor in the sunporch and I was always afraid some heavy-footed friend
would tread on the rear catches.
It’s happy all summer on the cart. The advantage of the hoist is that you
can install the hard top without the assistance of a friend, but we don’t
have a garage to suspend it from.

I have a hoist and it does save floor space. It is secure enough to
hold the car through the winter. My biggest problem with it is
distributing the weight of the hardtop properly to balance the hoist.
The last two winters I’ve had it hanging safely but unevenly. I
wouldn’t recommend it unless your floor space is at a premium. I’d
rather have the cart myself.

I’m in pretty much the same boat at this point — need a way to stow the
hardtop for the winter, which means a few good months of it dangling on
high.
I found the hoist at the Moss Motors’ Web site, but no sign of the cart —
does someone else make this..?
Another option: has anyone set up secure brackets on their garage wall, so
they can lift the hood and fix it against the wall for a period?

This statement confuses me–if you’re storing your hardtop for the winter,
when *do* you use it?

Dumb move on my part. Backed into an innocent parked Sunfire in a
snowbank. Shattered driver’s side rear light, crumpled bumper, bent back
fender, scuffed and offset trunk lid.
Happen to know any good body shops in Montreal?

Our cart came from Moss Motors. Look again, it may not be really
obvious. It’s metal, painted grey and works well. Comes with a cover to
keep the dust off.

AAAaaarrrggghhhh!
Crunched.

I’ve never had to look for a body shop before. Does anyone out there, by
any chance, know a good one in Montreal?

Ouch, yowch! Sorry can’t help with a body shop as the drive might be just a
tad too long for you to come down to Pennsylvania.
Hope _you’re_ okay – the car can be fixed a lot easier than you! Good luck!

Ditto. ‘Cept mine has a bed of last summer’s kiddie pool — without the
water of course.

Only in blizzards! :>
(Could be a cue for that old Monty Python sketch… "Rain? Bah! We
only used the hardtop if it was hailing golfballs!")
Nah, sorry, the more boring truth is that I mixed my words up there.
Meant to say that on my new MX-5, much like my Dad’s M1, I’ll only be
_using_ the top in winter, and _storing_ in in spring-summer-autumn.
Have managed to track down those hardtop carts, btw. They look great.
I might get one to stow my hardtop at my Dad’s place (his hardtop
already has a home on a large bench area, carefully wrapped to keep
out dust), and leave the hardtop hoist for the time being.
(It’s high-summer here in Sydney, plenty of sunshine for months to
come!)
David
I had mine stored and a mouse ate part of the rubber trim. I recommend moth
balls or lot of traps to keep the mice away.

Everyone knows the best way to store it is like I do–propped on top of a
