Hi all,
Can anyone recommend a good battery charger and a place where I can
order it?
The battery page on Miata.net mentions the WestCo EZ-12R but I don’t
see it on the WestCo page. I’ve found some on the various Miata
vendor pages but I’m not sure exactly who makes them or which one is
best.
Also, does the battery need to be disconnected during charging?
Thanks,
– Mike

Autozone has a good century that is portable and pretty much universal,
it will do 6V and 12V deep cycle and normal as well as 2A automatic
(best feature) and a 15a quick charge (not recommended for a small
battery) as well as a 100a kick start. I don’t remember what i paid but
it was reasonable and century unlike much of the autozone junk makes a
quality product (welders etc..). I have seen them dropped, run over,
submeerged, you name it and still work forever.

Pep Boys (and I imagine all other big box stores) sell a product called a
‘Battery Tender’ for about $55.
This unit charges and maintains a battery. A trickle charger isn’t good for
a battery, as it only charges and charges and charges. This unit has some
brains, and charges the battery to 100%, then allows it to discharge
normally to about 85%, and recharges again. This, you don’t get the
problems. These problems may not be as notable in a gel battery like ours,
as opposed to a lead acid battery.
I use it, and leave the car plugged in when I’m not driving it regularly.
I highly recommend it.
