AutoWeek reviews the '99 on "Car Board"

AutoWeek Magazine reviews the new Miata in the May 4 issue on its regular "Car
Board" short-takes feature.

The authors state that driving the ’99 "is like visiting an old, dear friend
who’s gotten, well, a facelift.  It’s slightly heavier, but also more powerful,
more sports car, and just as much fun."

Taking a swipe at SUV buyers, the board recommends that they "should be
required to drive a Miata for a week to remember just how enjoyable motoring so
close to the ground is…"

Slightly heavier? Shows you how much the auto writers know about their
own trade — I’ve heard that the car is some 50 lbs LIGHTER due to the
    lack of pop-up headlights…

Akira-san — do you remember where they got the info about the car being
    heavier?

In any case, I completely agree with the sentiment about the SUV buyers
    :@) !!

They mention very little about the car, but one thing they DO list is curb
weight—they peg it at 2299 lbs.  Doesn’t say which version they tested, but
likely the Sport.  Maybe they meant it’s slightly heavier than the first
    iteration, ’90-’93?

Is that a hoot or what?  I say it may teach ‘em some courtesy—got run out of
my lane by an idiot in a Blazer this afternoon, fortunately no sheet metal
damage.  He got pissed when I nailed my CRI’s as he came over on me!  >:-(

BTW, welcome back—did you know that I’d appointed myself Pope of the NG since
you left?  Yes, that WAS white smoke coming out of my ears…  ;-)  (Sorry, old
    joke there…)

They probably got it straight from Mazda and didn’t actually weigh their
test car at all.  That’s what Mazda’s specs are for a ’99 manual.  6
pounds heavier than a ’97, btw.

Since I am probably one of the few people that has had their ’99 Miata
up on a scale I can probably help clear this up. With 1/4 tank of gas
and no spare my ’99 Sport came to 2225 or almost exactly 30lbs heavier
than a ’94-’97 R model. However my Sport has the optional power steering
and I am guessing that without it the weight would be almost identical.

FWIW we weighed several ’94-’99 Miatas and it appears that a/c adds 45lbs
to the ’94-’97 model and I would guess 5-10 lbs more to the ’99 model
(’94-’97 models have the condensor pre-installed while the ’99 does not).
