Dealerships

I just wanted to say something nice about a dealership, for a change ;) .

When my poor little Miata got crunched <sob!> and was in the shop, a sales
representative scratched the quarter panel and reported it to the body
shop.  It’s nice when a mistake is made and then acknowledged.  The body
shop fixed it before telling me about it, and apologized for the
inconvenience.

Oh, yeah, the dealer was Bay Area Mazda in Redwood City, CA.  The body shop
(Peninsula Body Works) is affiliated, but not owned, with them.  Both the
body shop and the dealership have been good to me.  Thanks!

Headrest speaker wiring

G’day all,
I have recently purchased a 1994 Laguna Blue MX-5 Clubman
(YIPPEE!!!),and am interested in installing headrest speakers.  I have
the standard Panasonic rad/cass fitted and although the speaker
connectors are present under the seats and the loom is plugged into the
head unit I can’t seem to get any audio output.

Am I missing something obvious?

Are the factory installed speakers connected in series or parallel?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BTW for those who didn’t pick the accent my car is Australian spec.

underhood + battery connection- where?

I want to install some of those Italian air horns in my 91 Miata. It’s not
obvious to me where I can pick up a 10 amp intermittent positive
connection. The horns use the stock horn wire to activact a solenoid for
the compresor.

Any ideas?

A509 or A510?

Hi,

did anyone experience a difference between the
Yokohama A509 and A510 on his Miata (stock size tires)?

Which one do you prefer?

Thanks
  Hannes.

Can’t help with this one.  It’s never been that cold in Seattle since
I’ve owned my Miata.

One of the most commonly seen bits of advice on winter driving in the
Miata is, DON’T add any extra weight to the trunk.  Not only is it
unnecessary, but it will screw the weight distribution up and make
matters worse, not better.  Get four good snow tires, and you will have
no trouble at all driving in winter (unless you get high-centered in
deep snow).  I have ordinary Les Schwab studded snows, and they work
just fine.  Others will probably be able to suggest other possibilities.

Limited Slip Sources?

Hi I’m looking for a Limited Slip for my ’90 Miata.  I prefer the idea
of a Torsen instead of an ordinary locking diff…  Is there any source
other than Mazda?  Will the Torsen fit in my diff case?  What year did
the Torsen diffs become available and if one won’t fit in my diff case,
will the complete Torsen assembly fit into a ’90?

What sort of prices are being asked?  (Either Canadian or U.S. funds)

        Thanks

HELP!! Diagnose my sick miata doc!

I had a harrowing experience this morning, and was hoping
someone on the group could give me some guidance/help.

I have a 95 miata (5 speed/wouldn’t HAVE an automatic!)
and it is my daily driver and my only car.  It has been
really cold here lately and although the car is garage kept,
it was about 10 degrees (or maybe even a little colder) this
morning when I started my commute to work.

While I don’t "warm up" the engine in the mornings, I make
it a point to not exceed 35mph or get the tach over 3500
until my temperature gauge is middling.  In other words,
this is one pampered car, at least till I get it good and
warm!  ;)  Then its Katy bar the redline at times!  haha!

About 6 blocks from my driveway, I was shifting from 3rd
to 4th as usual.  I was driving along at about 30mph.
When I let out on the clutch and started to accelerate an
EXTREMELY strange noise filled the car. It wasn’t a continuous
sound, nor particularly deafeningly loud either, but sounded very
sick!!  I thought the bottom of the car was going to drop out.
METALLIC/GRATING with a swishing or circular
noise.  I immediately downshifted back into 3rd, thinking
the 4th gear might not have engaged, but the sound did not stop.
(GRATE, GRATE, SWISH, GRATE!)

I started to find a place to turn around, or at least pull
off to investigate.  But after about 1/2 mile, the sound
went away.  My commute is about 15 miles, and although I was
about half afraid to go on, I chanced it and the sound did
not return.  On lunch, I took the car out for about 20 miles
and noticed nothing really unusual (except for a slight
clicking noise which may have been there all along since I
usually either have the top down, the stereo up, or both!)
Same for the drive home.  So 50 miles after the sound from
hell, everything seems ok.

The clicking noise that I’ve never noticed before was very
faintly audible and was only happening when the
car was IN GEAR and I was accelerating.  It wasn’t just
valve clatter.  The car HAD to be in gear, if i was just sitting
still and giving it a little gas…no clicking.  Or if I was just
coasting with my foot off the gas….no clicking.  Soon as I went
to 1st, let out on the clutch and gently took off, there it was.
Maybe this is related to the noise from hell??

A few questions….

(1) Any speculation of what this may have been?  Could it have
        been cold weather related??

(2) Should I contiue to drive it…assuming nothing is wrong, or
should I go ASAP and get it checked.

(3) Although I DO change my own oil (which amazes most men!  haha)
thats about the extent of my mechanical knowledge.  So what
do I tell the mechanic to look at?  Some fellow at work that
said maybe a ‘pressure plate’ stuck, or a ‘knock out joint’
may be out of adjustment.  Although the car is still under
warranty, I’d like to solve this while it IS!

(4) REAL STUPID QUESTION…is it even in the realm of possibility to
shift into REVERSE while moseying along at 30mph.  I wouldn’t
think it would be (without leaving the tranny in the road, and
some major effort in the shifting!)  but after this happened I
        just considered it.

Any advice will be extremely appreciated.  Please post any respones
to the group since I don’t have an email.  Thanks in advance!

Sincerely,

Darlene

AOL Miata group?

The Miata.net FAQ described an AOL forum for Miata-philes. Can anyone
direct me to it within AOL? Searches yield zip.

Thanks,

Bill
